Things to see and do in Yangon

When visiting Yangon, one of the first places you should visit is the Shwedagon Pagoda. Constructed over 2500 years ago, this Pagoda is the oldest Buddhist stupa in the world. 

To get around Yangon, you could take the Circular Railway. Over 100,000 people use the railway everyday on their commute to and from work. Operating 20 times a day, with over 39 stations. The average speed is a mere 15.3 KM per hour, spending the day enjoying the views around the city is a day you won’t regret.

The Chaukhtatgyi Buddha temple is well known throughout Yangon. Located in the Bahan township, the reclining Buddha, 66 meters long it’s one of the largest in Myanmar.

If you’re looking to experience the heritage of Yangon, we’d recommend visiting U Thant House here you can find out about the life work of U Thant, who was an educator, writer, civil servant and Myanmar’s top diplomat during the height of the cold war.

At the heart of downtown you’ll  come across the recently renovated Ministers Building, now known as the Secretariat. The building is most famous for the location where General Aung San, the father of modern Myanmar spend his working days. On the 19th July 1947, the ministers building is where Aung San and six cabinet ministers were assassinated.

Located in the Melia Hotel, is the notorious restaurant the Market, this restaurant has a great selection of European dishes. Best known for it’s lunch menu, this restaurant is voted #3 in Yangon.

Important landmarks

If you’re moving to Yangon, there will be several important landmarks that you’ll need to get acquainted with to help navigate the city. To begin, you’ll hear people use miles as a reference for how far places are within the city. These mile references are in accordance with how many miles something is located away from Shwedagon Pagoda. 

As an expat you’ll most likely be using the market place by city mart for your weekly groceries. There are two separate locations for this super market, one in Bahan township and one located at 6.5 miles.

Another important landmark will be Inya lake. Using the lake as a reference point will help you break down the locations of each townships, along with the distance reference from the Shwedagon Pagoda.

The best and biggest shopping center in Yangon is the Myanmar Plaza. Located next to Inya Lake, you’ll be able to find everything you need within this complex.
